SLENDERWALL® Passes a Battery of ASTM & AAMA Tests
Midland, Va. – Smith-Midland® Corporation and EASI-SET® Industries contracted Architectural Testing Incorporated of York, PA to conduct performance testing on a full scale composite mock-up of Slenderwall Architectural Precast wall panels. The mockup consisted of three rows of precast panels vertically stacked. Each row was composed of two separate panels. Each panel contained punched opening(s) for the installation of window units and HAVC. The overall size of the tested assembly was 30’ 6” x 29’ 4”. The tests performed on the panels included: Air Infiltration ASTM E 283 99, Standard test method for determining the rate of air leakage through exterior windows, curtain walls and doors under specified pressure differences across the specimen. Test results: less than 0.01 cfm/ft2 Static Pressure Water Resistance ASTM E 331-93, Standard test method for water penetration of exterior windows, curtain walls and doors by uniform static air pressure difference. Test results: No leakage noted. Dynamic Pressure Water Resistance: AAMA 501.1-94, Standard test method for exterior windows, curtain walls and doors for water penetration using dynamic pressure. Test Results: No leakage noted. Interstory Differential Movement: AAMA 501.4-2000, Recommended static test method for evaluating curtain wall and storefront systems subjected to seismic and wind induced interstory drifts. Test Results: No apparent damage was noted Structural Performance: ASTM E 330-96, Standard Test Method for structural performance of exterior windows, curtain walls and doors by uniform static air pressure difference. Test Results: No deflection beyond L/240 Thermal Cycling/Condensation Evaluation: AAMA 501.5-98, Thermal cycling of exterior walls Test Results: No apparent damage was noted. This testing done by, ATI, an accredited independent laboratory confirms that SLENDERWALL® is manufactured to meet and exceed building life cycle requirements. Slenderwall consists of high-strength architectural precast concrete connected to a heavy-gauge galvanized steel frame with welded stainless steel anchors. The SLENDERWALL® panels are 40-60% lighter than conventional precast concrete and brick, weighing only 28 pounds per square foot. The Slenderwall system provides the water resistant properties of precast concrete; the reduced weight of galvanized steel framing and the time saving and quality control of prefabrication. SLENDERWALL® is available in a variety of architectural precast concrete finishes including brick, tile, polished granite, exposed aggregate or any combination thereof. The heavy-gauge galvanized steel frame accepts plumbing, electrical wiring and insulation, thereby eliminating the need for additional light-gauge framing to accept drywall. Unique to SLENDERWALL® is the proprietary Thermoguard™ insulator/isolator epoxy coated stainless steel Nelson anchors that connect the two-inch concrete facing to the steel frame. The proprietary system significantly reduces thermal transfer between the exterior and the interior of the building, saving on heating and cooling costs.
